Just getting started and don't want to shell out on a major app ?

Here are a few freebies available now..in no particular order

Anim8or

Welcome to the home page of Anim8or.  Anim8or is a 3D modeling and character animation program that I have written over the past couple of years, not as a commercial endeavor, but because I love 3D graphics, animation, and programming.  While it is far from a complete professional level application like 3DStudio MAX or Lightwave, I believe that it has enough capability to be of use to others.

Blender

Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU Public License.

Milkshake

MilkShape 3D is a low-polygon modeler, which was initially designed for Half-Life. During the development, many file formats have been added.

MilkShape 3D has all basic operations like select, move, rotate, scale, extrude, turn edge, subdivide, just to mention a few. MilkShape 3D also allows low-level editing with the vertex and face tool. Primitives like spheres, boxes and cylinders are also available.

MilkShape 3D has also skeletal animation capabilities. This allows to export to morph target animation like the ones in the Quake model formats or to export to skeletal animations like Half-Life or Genesis3d

Povray

The Persistence of Vision Raytracer is a high-quality, totally free tool for creating stunning three-dimensional graphics. It is available in official versions for Windows, Mac OS/Mac OS X and i86 Linux. The source code is available for those wanting to do their own ports.

Terragen

Terragen is a scenery generator, created with the goal of generating photorealistic landscape images and animations. It is available for Windows and the Mac OS. At this stage in its development, Terragen is free for personal, noncommercial use.

Although Terragen is a continually evolving work-in-progress, it is already capable of near-photorealistic results for professional landscape visualisation, special effects, art and recreation. Terragen has been used in a variety of commercial applications including film, television and music videos, games and multimedia, books, magazines and print advertisements

Feel free to add any of your favorites.. i know there are loads more out there

if you get terragen is well worth registering, it,s cheap and the higher resolution with the resgistered version is so much better than the low res. if you know of any sites with plugins etc for any 3d app, please post.

I find the demo's as equally enjoyable. My favorite demos are

Particle Illusion at www.wondertouch.com - Set some time aside as this demo is addictive. Also, don't forget to download the Show IEL so that you can play with all the emitters. The download page is located here.

Also, for those who are closet sadists...there is Endorphin LE...blow up these little avatars with the most awesome display of rag doll physics. Hours of fun for the ghoulish at heart...or as 3D World said "the most fun you can have in a legal state of mind". The learning edition can be found here.

Thanks,
DaveA

GMax is also a good program for creating 3d Models, because it's a light version of 3d Studio Max just without a renderer, so it is really good for Gamedesigners. Or you could take another program to render your scene. I think you should give it a try
