As I hope you are aware at this moment (29 Aug 2010) there are 33 miners trapped in a mine in Chile, but fear not the Pope is on the case

Quote

The Pope says he is praying for the Chilean miners trapped underground and has urged them to remain calm as efforts continue to free them.

Pope Benedict assured the 33 men and their families that he was spiritually close to them and was praying for a "happy conclusion" to their ordeal.

The head of the Roman Catholic church was speaking to pilgrims gathered for his traditional Sunday blessing, delivered at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome

What we have here is a lose/lose situation for the pope

1. If his prayers are answered then what sort of god is it that puts the miners and their families through such torture ?
2. If his prayers are not answered then either god does not exist, or he does not listen to the pope
3. Why does the pope pray for a "happy conclusion" why not pray for the rock to be torn asunder and the men to be lifted out by singing angels, a stroll in the park for his god ?
4. If the outcome is poor the perhaps he is praying to the wrong god
6. Perhaps god does not intervene in the fates of men, in which case it must have been a different god we read about in the old testament
7. If god does not intervene then why pray, in fact why give the miners false hope ?
8. god may intervene and save the miners due to prayer but has been happy to let millions of others perish and ignore their prayers
9. It is all Bull, hence the term Papal Bull

Am i to be dammed for suggesting that the Pope may not be infallible ? For those who think so i would remind them of the events surrounding the "Cadaver Synod" in 897 AD when the then infallible Pope Stephen ordered the exhumation of the former infallible pope Formosus. His body was removed from his tomb, placed on a throne, accused of a variety of crimes and found guilty. The body of the infallible "holy father" was then stripped of it's vestments, had three fingers cut of and reburied in a graveyard intended for foreigners. Some time later the body was dug up again and thrown into the river Tiber. It must be said, however, that it was believed that this body when washed up on the shores of the Tiber began to perform miracles.

Public outrage led to the imprisonment and later strangulation of the infallible Pope Stephen. Later the infallible Pope Theodore II annulled the results of the Cadaver synod and reburied, the somewhat" tatty" corpse in St Peters Basilica with full papal vestments, However the madness continued and later the infallible pope Sergius III overturned these rulings and had the results of the Cadaver Synod reinstated

What a bunch of raving loonies !!

Of those 24 popes who held office from 872 to 965, seven--nearly one-third--died violently or under suspicious circumstances. Five popes were assassinated in office, or deposed and then murdered. John VIII, the first pope to be assassinated, was poisoned by his entourage; when the poison did not act quickly enough, his skull was crushed by blows from a hammer. Both Stephen VII and Leo V were deposed, imprisoned, and strangled. John X was deposed, imprisoned, and suffocated by being smothered with a pillow. Stephen IX was imprisoned, horribly mutilated by having his eyes, nose, lips, tongue and hands removed, and died of his injuries. Two other popes died in circumstances strongly indicative of foul play: Hadrian III was rumored to have been poisoned, and John XII, the sources tell us, either died of a stroke suffered while in bed with a married woman or was beaten to death by the woman's outraged husband

In 896 Boniface VI became the first (and only) person to be elected pope after having previously been twice degraded from holy orders for immorality.

Documented history proves that for nearly two thousand years the Christian tradition of the Bishops of Rome has been founded on, indeed, has wholeheartedly supported deceit, murder, sexual depravity, torture, rape, paedophilia, bestiality, prostitution, incest and possibly worse ??

In the year 440 Pope Sixtus III (432-40) was tried for the seduction of a nun.

Pope Leo I (440-61) was a warped and sadistic torturer. He made his victims confess that they mixed semen with the sacrament and used young girls at the altar for the purpose. He was the first Pope to claim the right to put anyone who disagreed with him to death.

Pope Sergius III (904-11) enjoyed sex with underaged girls. According to the historian Baronius, Sergius III was "the slave of every vice". When he was 45, Sergius took a 15- year-old mistress - the affair produced a son who went on to become Pope John XI.

It was said that Pope John XII (955-64) invented sins that had not been known since the beginning of the world and whole monasteries spent days and nights praying for his death. He turned his home, the Lateran Palace, into a brothel. He used the papal treasury to pay off his gambling debts. He died on May 14th 964 aged twenty-four, after he was caught in bed by the husband of one of his mistresses in 'the very act of adultery'.

Pope John XIII (965-72) was condemned as an adulterer who "defiled his father's concubine and his own niece". He was said to have died at the hands of an enraged husband, caught in the act of adultery

The child-pope Benedict IX (who became Pope at the age of 12!) was bi-sexual, sodomised animals, ordered murders and dabbled in witchcraft and Satanism. He loved to throw wild, bi-sexual orgies. Benedict IX held the post of Pope in the years 1032-44, 1045 and 1047-48. He was described as "A demon from hell in the disguise of a priest...", and St Peter Damian said of him: "That wretch, from the beginning of his pontificate to the end of his life, feasted on immorality". Dante estimated that under Benedict IX the papacy reached an all-time low in immorality and debauchery. When he was 23 he survived an assassination attempt (strangling at the altar during Mass). Benedict went on to
marry his cousin and sell the papacy to his godfather, Gregory VI.

In the year 1095 Pope Urban II introduced the callagium, a sex tax which alllowed the clergy to keep mistresses, provided they paid an annual fee to the papacy. This had the immediate effect of reducing the use of concubines and hugely increasing clerical homosexuality

Pope Anacletus (1130-8) committed incest with his sister and several other female relatives. He enjoyed raping nuns.

Robert of Geneva was well known for his ability to decapitate a man with a pike. He became Pope Clement VII (1378-94) and was 'much given to fleshy pleasure'. He surrounded himself with page boys, whose jackets, it was noted, shrunk from being knee length, to mid-buttock 'or even worse'.

Pope Clement VI (1342-52) was described by Petrarch as "an ecclesiastical Dionysus with his obscene and infamous artifaces". Clement VI slept with prostitutes and had dozens of mistresses. When he died, fifty priests said Mass for the repose of his soul for nine consecutive days, but it was generally agreed that this was not going to be nearly enough to prevent the dead pope from going directly to hell.

It was widely rumoured that the ex-pirate Pope John XXIII (1410-15) was an Atheist. He tortured his own cardinals and was said to have "had wicked company with two of his own sisters". Robert Hallum, Bishop of Salisbury said that he: "ought to be burnt at the stake".

Pope Pius II (1458-64) had been a well known author of erotic literature, and had fathered about 12 illegitimate children.

The homosexual Pope Paul II (1464-71) liked to see naked men being racked and tortured. Alledgedly, he died of a heart attack whilst being sodomized by one of his favourite boys.

Pope Alexander VI (1 January 1431 – 18 August 1503) (Spanish: Alejandro VI, Catalan: Alexandre VI), born Roderic Llançol, later Roderic de Borja i Borja (Italian: Rodrigo Borgia) was Pope from 1492 to 1503. He is one of the most controversial of the Renaissance popes, and his surname (Italianized as Borgia) became a byword for the debased standards of the papacy of that era.

Alexander VI had four, and possibly five, children by his long time mistress Vannozza dei Cattani a courtesan of the House of Candia (while she was married to Domenico da Rignano)

He had annulled his daughter Lucrezia's marriage to Giovanni Sforza — who had responded to the suggestion that he was impotent with the counter-claim that Alexander and Cesare indulged in incestuous relations with Lucrezia

Such was Alexander VI's unpopularity that the priests of St. Peter's Basilica refused to accept the body for burial until forced to do so by papal staff. Only four prelates attended the Requiem Mass. Alexander's successor on the Throne of St. Peter, Francesco Todeschini-Piccolomini, who assumed the name of Pope Pius III (1503), forbade the saying of a Mass for the repose of Alexander VI's soul, saying, "It is blasphemous to pray for the damned". After a short stay, the body was removed from the crypts of St. Peter's and installed in a less well-known church, the Spanish national church of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli.

The Sistine Chapel was built by Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84). He had six illegitimate sons, of which one was the result of an incestuous relationship with his sister.

Pope Innocent VIII (1484-92) sired eight illegitimate sons and probably as many daughters, of whom he openly acknowledged. His reign as Pope was known as 'The Golden Age of Bastards'. He authorised an inquisition against those thought to be witches. On his death bed a wet nurse was found for his final craving - woman's milk.

Pope Julius II (1503-13) who commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the the Sistine Chapel, was a paedophile and spent much of his time with small boys and male prostitutes.

Pope Paul III (1534-49) enjoyed an incestuous relationship with his daughter. To gain control of his family inheritance, he poisoned several relatives, including his mother and neice. He killed two cardinals and a Polish bishop to settle an argument over a theological point. Paul III was probably Rome's biggest ever pimp - he kept a roll of about 45,000 prostitutes, who paid him a monthly tribute.

Pope Julius III (1550-55) sodomized young boys, of which one was his own, illegitimate, son. He appointed several handsome teenage boys as cardinals. Cardinal della Casa's famous poem In Praise of Sodomy was dedicated to Pope Julius III.

Plus ça change (plus c'est la même chose).

On my fate they have said :

Pope Pius XI (1922–1939), Encyclical Mortalium Animos: "The Catholic Church alone is keeping the true worship. This is the font of truth, this is the house of faith, this is the temple of God; if any man enter not here, or if any man go forth from it, he is a stranger to the hope of life and salvation… Furthermore, in this one Church of Christ, no man can be or remain who does not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors."

Pope Pius XII (1939–1958), Encyclical Humani Generis, August 12, 1950: "Some reduce to a meaningless formula the necessity of belonging to the true Church in order to gain eternal salvation."

Pope Pius XII (1939–1958), Allocution to the Gregorian University (17 October 1953): "By divine mandate the interpreter and guardian of the Scriptures, and the depository of Sacred Tradition living within her, the Church alone is the entrance to salvation: She alone, by herself, and under the protection and guidance of the Holy Spirit, is the source of truth."

Second Vatican Council, Dogmatic Constitution Lumen gentium, 14: "They could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it, or to remain in it."

What another bunch of raving loonies

By the way i have nothing against prostitution as such, my issue is with the heads of the catholic church who claim direct authorisation fom their god, preach and demand outragoeous levels of piety from their "flock" whilst at the same time indulging in those very "pleasures". If prostitituition was thier only vice i would not be particularly bothered, but in all honesty many of the above popes were perverts at best and sexually depraved serial psychopaths and worse..note the one vice that seems absent is necrophillia but i am pretty sure that must have occured

A quote from Igantius Loyola, founder and Father General of the Jesuits

Quote

That we may be altogether of the same mind and in conformity with the Church herself, if she shall have defined anything to be black which appears to our eyes to be white, we ought in like manner to pronounce it to be black. For we must undoubtingly believe, that the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Spirit of the Orthodox Church His Spouse, by which Spirit we are governed and directed to Salvation, is the same; ...

So this is a saying that if you see something is white, others tell you it is white, scientific experiment says it is white, photgraphic evidence shows it as white but the church says it is black then it is black.... I hope you all appreciate the sinister implications of this. The church become the sole repository of ALL truths and overides all other sources of information.

bye the way, I used to be a Christian.

Well as we all know the miners have been rescued but as each day unfolded i got more and more disturbed about the whole thing. Something deep inside says to me that all is not as it seems. I don't know how to explain my unease with this but it started when i was just listening to the reports on TV and not actually watching the screen, it all seemed so, well, so much like a movie script. The chances are i am wrong and my gut feelings are just giving me the wrong signals. But i would not be surprised if in years to come the whole episode turns out to be some sort of scam.
