Monitor settings, especially gamma are critical for correct renderings. Beginners often do not have their monitors correctly calibrated and thus make adjustments to their 3d lighting to get the look they like but when posted on the net the images can look very bad to those who have calibrated their monitors

Sadly whenevr you do a search on google for gamma test pages or similar you often get to sites that overdose on theory, i think this has a lot to do with ego, trying to impress the readers when all we really want is a straight forward reliable base image to work from
